Moushtak EstephoRichmond, B.C. – October 8, 2014 – The final Richmond Community Coalition candidate today announced his intent to run for the Richmond Board of Education in the November municipal election – bringing the Coalition’s number of Trustee candidates to three, and total Council and Trustee candidates to nine. Local resident Moushtak Estepho announced his candidacy at a news conference this afternoon in Richmond.

Richmond Community Coalition Board member, Gordon Walker, welcomed the final RCC candidate. 'Moushtak’s story is one of adversity and perseverance – as a refugee from Iraq after spending three years in a refugee camp in Turkey – he came to Canada with his six brothers where he has demonstrated a deep commitment to our community,' said Walker. 'This is the kind of invaluable world life experience we need on the Board of Education to further promote understanding and tolerance in our highly diverse and multi-cultural city.'

Estepho is a new father and long-time Richmond resident, having grown up and gone to school here after coming to Canada as a Christian refugee from Iraq in 1994. 'Two aspects of my life led me to this decision to run – I’m a proud, new father and I’ve also seen my disabled brother face many challenges in the school system. With this in mind, I want to roll up my sleeves now to make sure we have an innovative and relevant learning environment for my daughter tomorrow, as well as for our students today, and ensure that our special needs school children have a voice at the Trustee table– the Richmond Community Coalition has made these kind of goals a priority, which is what has drawn me to the coalition.' Estepho said. 'I am also committed to ensuring that our schools reflect the amazing diversity of our city.'

The Richmond Community Coalition is a community-based organization whose goal is to increase citizen engagement in the municipal government – and increase voter participation in local elections – by bringing fresh faces and ideas to City Hall and the School Board office. As of today, the Richmond Community Coalition has six Council and three Trustee candidates nominated for the November election – making the Richmond Community Coalition the broadest based civic coalition in this year’s local election.
