Sustainable and Affordable Housing

The Richmond Community Coalition Association (RCCA) believes a strong community means a diverse community that is bonded by the sense of neighbourhood.  A key to accomplishing this would be to have a sustainable and affordable community that will attract young families, while giving a sense of belonging to those who are already in the community.

RCCA Key Values to Sustainable Community Development

The Richmond Community Coalition Association believes engagement with the community, City Planners and the home building industry to identify and solve problems is essential in the City of Richmond.

RCCA is calling for:

  • A community-based, proactive, problem-solving approach to Urban Planning
  • City Planners and the home building industry to communicate with and work in close partnership with the community
  • The City of Richmond to plan developments with affordable housing strategies that support more housing options for families, while keeping current residents’ desire for a sense of community in mind.

RCCA believes sincere cooperation is essential to establish community-based and sustainable neighbourhoods.  The City, the home building industry, and residents must all be involved in planning for sustainable growth.

Housing Affordability

RCCA recognizes that property prices are on the rise and out of reach for a growing number of the population. The gap between wages and cost of housing is growing wider. The decline in affordability in the housing market in Richmond results in reduction of younger families in Richmond, which leads to issues such as decrease enrolment in some school catchments.

RCCA believes it is time to:

  • Investigate for ways to use land more efficiently by  increasing affordable housing stock in existing neighbourhoods
  • Examine land use policy and building practices to encourage sustainable buildup of housing options, while keeping individual neighbourhood’s character

RCCA Urban Planning Strategies

  • RCCA continues to advocate for the City of Richmond to work with residents in reshaping neighbourhoods through innovative urban planning methods
  • RCCA is advocating for the City of Richmond to investigate options to accommodate for more affordable housing options in neighbourhoods, while maintaining neighbourhood’s characteristics
  • RCCA is advocating for the City of Richmond to continue to invest in community amenities to support neighbourhood growth
  • RCCA urges the Provincial and Federal Governments to support the City of Richmond by providing sustainable funding for infrastructure to support neighbourhood growth
  • RCCA continues to work with key partners and stakeholders to share knowledge and develop constructive ways to reshape neighbourhoods
  • RCCA encourages greater community understanding and improved consultation around housing options
  • Sustainable community development requires the active participation by community members and RCCA encourages Richmond residents to get actively engaged in efforts to enhance the sense of community in Richmond.
