Meet Jonathan Ho

 

Jonathan Ho

Jonathan has been a resident of Richmond for 18 years and has been working with TD Bank in various positions and departments for more than 15 years. He was elected as a Trustee to the Richmond Board of Education in November 2014. He currently serves as the Chair of the Audit Committee, Vice-Chair of Education Committee, and the representative to Child Care Development Advisory Committee.

Jonathan has been actively involved in the community for many years. He has served in School Planning Council, his condo strata council, his church’s Hospice service team, as well as a youth leader. Moreover, he had co-hosted a weekly current affairs phone-in show at Fairchild Radio.

Before he immigrated to Canada, he served the Royal Hong Kong Regiment, British Army in Hong Kong. With his wife, Flora, they have 2 kids and both of them are in the public school system. His wife has also been actively serving in Parent Advisory Council for many years.

Jonathan has a vision for Richmond School District: To be a leader in public education by empowering our students to became engaged and caring citizens of our community and preparing them for the challenging future. Giving back to Richmond is his labor of love.

Q & A

1. How long have you lived in Richmond? Why do you love living here?

I have lived in Richmond since my family immigrated here from Hong Kong in 1997. I love Richmond because it is a beautiful city and a multicultural community in Canada.

2. What do you feel the 3 biggest issues facing Richmond are?

(a) Housing affordability particular for young generation
(b) Traffic congestion, especially downtown Richmond during rush hours
(c) Ever increaing property tax. Need for the transparency of our tax dollar at the City Hall

3. If voted into office, what is the first thing you want to achieve?

Our City has approxiatemeately $900 million reserves. Why do we still need to increase the property tax every year? Is there any way to reduce the rate of increase in property tax every year?

4. Why have you chosen to be a part of the Richmond Community Coalition specifically?

Richmond Community Coalition (RCC) is a group of Richmond residents who are committed to building a better city through engaging more residents through the civic process in the Richmond local government.

5. What have you done in your professional life that will help you in your public role?

Twenty years of experience in the banking and financial services industry has made me more able to help oversee the city's budget and help the city more effective use of taxpayers‘ hard earn money.

6. Please give a background of your education and professional experience.

(a) Former Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation by the Financial Planning Standards Council.
(b) Diploma course in Hotel Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic
(c) British Army Basic Military Training by the Royal Hong Kong Defence Force

7. Tell us three things about you that most people don’t know.

(a) I love dancing very much. I got a nickname, “the dancing trustee” in Richmond School District.
(b) I served the Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers), British Army in the Crown Colony of Hong Kong when I        was young.
(c) I love reading history related books.

8. Tell us a little bit about your hobbies and interests, and why they are important to you.

I like dancing very much. It is difficult to find time to do sports since my life is very busy. Dancing can help me exercise while enjoying music.

9. On a typical weekend you will find me doing this:

On the weekend I usually spend time with my family and we go to church on Sunday morning.
